I get it…
I used to be too…
I used to buy anything related to any of the social media sites. I didn’t care which one.
Initially everybody was talking about MySpace. So,I bought all these MySpace products.
Then YouTube came along and I started buying those products.
Twitter and Facebook followed, same thing.
And the cycle just kept going.
I learned a lot of tricks. Only these tricks did not get me results.
There just was not enough information to make it work for me.
I was so frustrated.
Here I was. I had spent thousands upon thousands of dollars and still I had no clue how to apply all this information to my business.
Sure I had made many “friends” online. But I am not sure why I even call them “friends”.
None of them even remotely resembles what I would call a true friend. Not that I blame them. After all, I am sure that they were saying the same thing about me.
Not only were these people not my “friends”, I was at a loss why I was chasing down all these people.
I had managed to get 5000 Twitter followers, but all it did was make the messages on my Twitter stream go by faster.
How in the world was I supposed to follow all these tweets and do something meaningful with them? I had no clue.
“No Matter What I Tried, It Did Not Work For Me”
I was so frustrated. It started to impact my personal life as well…
You see I am a tennis player. I love to play tennis matches. But I had such a hard time concentrating while I was on the court.
My phone would beep constantly with more tweets from “friends” telling me that they were having pizza! And these were all people I don’t even know!
It was so distracting. My mind was distracted to the point where I could not even concentrate on my match.
I started loosing more and more matches. Which made me even more frustrated.
Here I was. Wasting time and money in my business and losing tennis matches in my spare time. Not a good situation.
“That Is When I Knew I Had to Start Over”
Like Einstein said: “the way to insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”.
I had to change what I was doing…
I asked myself “What is going on here? What am I doing wrong? Why are they saying that it is easy to make $20,000 in a month and why is it not happening to me?”
I finally decided to see if I could use the skills that I had learned in my time as a food scientist. You see, I not only have a bachelors in IT, but I also have a PhD in food science. I worked as a scientist for one of the most innovative foods manufacturers in the world.
You may never have heard of the company name, Unilever, but I know you are familiar with this company. They are the number one competitor of Proctor & Gamble, and make products like Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Bertoli oil, Hellmann’s mayonaise and Lipton tea.

I started out in their research and development department with 300 other PhD’s, back in The Netherlands. I managed to get 5 patents in my name by using sound scientific deductive reasoning.
This success helped my career and to make a long story short, I became an executive for Unilever here in the USA.
Throughout my career I learned a lot, from deductive reasoning in the R&D department to branding and strategic thinking as an executive for one of the largest, and most sophisticated marketing companies in the world.
I figured that if I could be successful there, why not use those same skills and see if I could use them to solve my issues with social media.
As soon as I used my old scientific deductive reasoning I was able to isolate the problem.
The missing link in all these social media courses, that I had sitting on my shelf, was that they were all tactics that may have worked for someone in a specific circumstance, but they lacked the strategic approach to make it work for everybody.
In my Unilever days, in order to be successful, we had to develop products that would sell in all countries, not just one. This took a lot of strategy sessions. At the end of the day we would always be able to come up with winners, as long as we followed the strategies.
And As Soon As I Started Thinking Strategically It Hit Me.
In the offline world one develops a business plan, with a strategy to follow including goals and objectives. This may sound complicated, but I know from experience that this approach is extremely successful.
Think about it this way. If you want to make a sandwich, you need bread, ham and cheese. But if you go to the store and grab everything that is available on the shelves, you are spending a lot of money and may end up overlooking the most critical ingredients for your sandwich.
It is the same in social media…
With a strategy in place, it is much easier to focus on what is important. There is no need to buy everything you come across hoping the critical steps become evident…
That is what I was missing in social media.
As soon as I started thinking in terms of strategies, my goals were unmistakable and I began seeing results...

Life is really good again.
I found that with a solid strategy in place, the mindset is totally different.
Lets take Facebook as an example. If you have 10,000 Facebook fans, but all they want to do is watch the Jersey shore, then my question is, why would 10,000 fans interest you? What good does it do you?
If none of these 10,000 people are really interested in you or your products, having 10,000 fans is useless. All it does, is waste your time in senseless conversations.
“Don’t Let That Happen to You”
The focus needs to be on a strategy. If you get 10,000 targeted fans by using the appropriate strategies, it is a different story. Now your fans will show up regularly and participate in the conversation.

You now have a purpose and a goal to be on Facebook and you can focus on that goal. Social media success will follow.
It is amazing what a difference it makes to use this approach.
Don’t make the same mistake I did.
Don’t chase more followers and fans, without a purpose or strategy. Anybody can get followers. I hope you realize now that the number of followers does not mean much in itself.

If your fans engage in meaningful conversations with you and your other followers, the more fans the better.
